ICAR-NRC on Mithun conducted Mithun Mela at Sago Village, Arunachal Pradesh

The "Mithun Mela" was held on 13th September 2023, in Sago village, Basar, Leparada district of Arunachal Pradesh. This event was a joint effort between the ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun and the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

During the Mithun Mela, farmers specializing in Mithun farming were offered valuable knowledge in scientific techniques, which encompassed the semi-intensive rearing approach. They were also instructed on how to register their animals using the newly introduced M-ANITRA app, developed in conjunction with ANITRA Tech based in Hyderabad. Furthermore, crucial supplies like barbed wire, CGI sheets, casting rope, and Travis were furnished as part of the tribal sub-plan (TSP). Approximately 80 Mithuns underwent FMD vaccination, and veterinary medications were provided for their routine healthcare.

During the event, Dr. T Heli, Deputy Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, presented an overview of the current status and future prospects of Mithun farming in the region. A significant highlight of the occasion was the Mithun judging competition, where prizes were given for the finest adult female, adult male, heifer, and calf. Esteemed guests, including Chief Guest Sri Gokar Basar, Honorable Member of Legislative Assembly for the 29th Basar ST constituency, and Guest of Honor, Dr. Tachi Taku, Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, added prestige to the event.

The Mithun Mela was a celebration of the rich heritage of Mithun farming in Arunachal Pradesh and a testament to the collaborative efforts of all involved. It was an event that not only honored tradition but also looked ahead to a promising future for Mithun farming in the region.
