The first ever 'Mithun Mela cum Farmers' Awareness' programme was jointly organized by ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland and Dept. Of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Govt. Of Mizoram at Khuangleng village, Champai district, Mizoram on 24th Jan. 2017 in order to create awareness among the mithun farmers for scientific mithun husbandry and to improve their livelihood.

The programme was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest Shri Pachhunga, SDO (S), Champai district, Mizoram in the presence of Dr. L. Pudiate, DVO, Champai district. Officials and technical staff from KVK , Khawzawl,Champhai District, ATMA, Champhai participated in the programme and displayed their technolgies . More than 200 farmers from Khuangleng and nearby villages participated in the Mela.

Dr. M. H. Khan, Senior Scientist from ICAR-NRC on Mithun welcomed all the dignitaries and farmer friends. He apprized about the mandate of the institute and various technologies generated by the institute since last 28 years of its inception. He also mentioned about the challenges faced by the farmers in mithun rearing and emphasised the need of scientific intervention in order to conserve this beautiful bovine species as well as to improve the livelihood of the mithun farmers.

Speaking on this occasion, Chief Guest Shri Pachhunga appreciated the organizers and higlighting that Mithun occupies an important role in the Mizo society since time immemorial and conserving this auspicious animal and increasing the population in Mizoram is our challenges as Mizoram has the lowest population of Mithun in the North East States. He also encouraged the Mithun farmers to continue rearing Mithun and to adopt the scientific mithun husbandry in order to imrove their livelihood.

Dr. C. Lalsawithuama, SDVO(S), Champai district Mizoram, highlighted the activities being done by the Dept. Of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry and emphasised the need of barbed wire fencing and microchip based identification of mithun.
The dignitaries and farmers visited all the stalls. Ear tagging of mithun was demonstrated by the Scientists from ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland. A Farmer-Scientist interaction was organized in which the problems of the farmers were answered by the team of experts from ICAR-NRC on Mithun.Government Primary school Khuangleng village participated on this auspicious occasion and performed Mizo cultural dance of Cheraw and Par lam.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Kobu Khate from NRCM. Dr. Lalchamliani, Scientist, ICAR-NRC on Mithun interact with the Mithun farmers regarding the problems and issues faced by them.
